Vincent Iorio Joins the New York Rangers: NHL Waivers Claimed (2026)

The NHL's Waiver Wire Drama: A New Chapter for Vincent Iorio

In a surprising turn of events, Vincent Iorio, the 23-year-old defenseman, is on the move again, but this time, it's not to the Washington Capitals. Iorio's journey has taken an intriguing twist, and here's why it's got the hockey world buzzing.

The New York Rangers claimed Iorio off NHL waivers on Saturday, snatching him from the San Jose Sharks. This move comes just months after the Sharks themselves picked up Iorio from the Capitals in October. With this, Iorio becomes the second team to acquire him via waivers this season.

During his time with the Sharks, Iorio suited up for 21 games, recording three assists. He averaged a solid 16:30 of ice time per game and was a regular on San Jose's penalty kill unit. However, his last game for the Sharks against the Capitals on January 15th saw him on the bench for the team's next six games.

But here's where it gets controversial... Iorio's journey with the Capitals was a bit rocky. Despite making the Opening Night roster earlier this year, he was a healthy scratch for all four games to start the 2025-26 campaign. He's played a total of nine NHL games for the Caps since the 2022-23 season but is yet to find the back of the net.

Now, Iorio finds himself with the Rangers, a team undergoing a major roster overhaul. General Manager Chris Drury has announced plans to trade away some of the team's veteran stars, including the popular Artemi Panarin, and rebuild for the future. The Rangers had an open spot on their defense after trading Carson Soucy to the Islanders, and Iorio fits the bill as a right-handed defender.

Iorio, who will become a restricted free agent in July, could make his Rangers debut as early as Thursday against the Carolina Hurricanes. And this is the part most people miss... the Rangers still have one more game against the Capitals this season, at home on April 5th. Will Iorio face his former team? Only time will tell.

So, what do you think? Is Iorio's move to the Rangers a fresh start, or is he just passing through on his way to bigger things? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
