Members of a Nottinghamshire golf club are expressing feelings of being 'betrayed' following the revelation of unexpected development plans that could lead to the closure of their beloved course. The owner has dramatically shifted its stance on a commitment made just over a year ago, stirring up emotions and concerns among the community.
Beeston Fields Golf Club, which includes a venue for weddings, was sold to Cilldara Group, a property developer based in Warwickshire, in November 2024. This sale had already raised alarms among both club members and local residents.
Initially, these fears were mitigated when Cilldara assured everyone that it would continue to operate the golf club, which has been a cherished family-owned establishment since its founding in 1923. However, in a recent email directed to golfers, the company disclosed its intentions to backtrack on this assurance—a move that has been labeled a "betrayal" by a former club captain.
In the communication to members, Cilldara stated, "I want to clarify that it was not our original intention to consider submitting a planning application at this early stage of ownership of the golf course. However, the reality is that the club is facing financial difficulties, and changes in the planning environment necessitate that we give this issue serious thought.
This development could have significant implications for the golf course's future, and we believe it is only fair to inform you before you make decisions about your upcoming membership renewals. We must emphasize that there are currently no guarantees regarding the outcome of any planning applications we submit."
A planning application is anticipated to be presented to Broxtowe Borough Council in the spring. Cilldara has reassured members that any housing project would not impact the golf course until at least March 31, 2028.
The message also pointed out that the government’s initiative to address the national housing shortage has placed additional pressure on Broxtowe Borough Council to meet housing targets. This situation, combined with the club's financial struggles, led the company to deem the housing proposal a "prudent/protective step."
Councillor Steve Carr, representing Beeston North for the Broxtowe Independent Group, expressed deep concern over Cilldara's revised stance. "I believe residents will share my frustration that the assurances made by the new owners have now been reversed," he remarked.
Previously, members were informed that Cilldara aimed to pursue smaller housing initiatives on Bramcote Drive and Beeston Fields Drive but intended to avoid developments that would affect the golf club directly.
A former club captain, who preferred to remain unnamed, articulated the sense of betrayal among members, stating they felt "terribly let down" by this sudden change. He voiced that many had grown wary of Cilldara from the very start of the sale but felt reassured by claims that the family behind the developer genuinely wanted to maintain the golf club's operations.
"It’s clear now that from the beginning, they never intended to keep Beeston Fields running as a viable entity," he lamented, expressing disappointment that club members were not given an opportunity to purchase the club from its previous owners.
The frustrated golfer elaborated that individuals renewed their memberships under the impression that they were investing in a stable golfing facility, unaware they were "locked into a club that is destined for decline," especially after being assured by the previous owners that the golf course would be preserved despite the sale.
Beyond denying golfers access to their course, the former captain emphasized that transforming this green space into housing would obliterate what he termed Beeston's "green lung."
"It’s more than just golf; it’s about the friendships and community ties that would be severed," he added passionately.
While it is a common stereotype that golf is an exclusive pastime for the upper middle class, he argued that it actually serves as a unifying force within communities.
Cilldara was reached out to for further comments regarding the shift in their plans but did not provide a response.
