Measles is currently spreading without detection in Adelaide, prompting a warning from SA Health following the discovery of a new case involving an adult individual. This person contracted the virus locally and did not travel abroad, which raises concerns about local transmission.
In light of this situation, SA Health has identified several locations frequented by the infected person during their contagious period. They caution anyone who was at these venues at the specified times to be aware of potential exposure:
- On January 27 at 9:42 AM, aboard the Adelaide Metro Tram traveling from Forestville to Royal Adelaide Hospital.
- At 10:11 AM on the same day, on a tram journey from Royal Adelaide Hospital to South Terrace.
- At BHP located at 10 Franklin Street, Adelaide, on January 27 between 9:45 AM and 5:30 PM.
- At Rolls n Rice, 6/118 King William Street, Adelaide, on January 27 from 12:45 PM to 1:30 PM.
- At 48 Flavours, 248 Unley Road, Hyde Park, on January 27 from 5 PM to 6 PM.
- At Unley Swimming Centre, Ethel St, Forestville, on January 26 from 4 PM to 6:30 PM.
Despite these exposures, SA Health assures that the listed locations do not currently pose an ongoing risk.
They strongly recommend that individuals who are not fully immunized and were present at these sites during the specified times remain vigilant for symptoms over the next few weeks. If any symptoms develop, they should consult a healthcare professional promptly.
Measles is known for its high contagion rate and can lead to severe health issues such as pneumonia and encephalitis, which can be life-threatening. The initial signs of measles typically include fever, cough, runny nose, and sore eyes, followed by a distinct blotchy rash that usually starts on the head and spreads downward across the body.
For those who suspect they might have been exposed or are experiencing symptoms, it is crucial to contact their doctor before visiting any medical facility. This allows healthcare providers to implement necessary precautions to prevent further spread of the disease.
Vaccination remains the most effective method to prevent measles infection, with two doses recommended to ensure maximum protection. Immunizations against measles are included in the National Immunisation Program, which schedules vaccinations for children at 12 months and again at 18 months.
Moreover, South Australia now provides the measles vaccine free of charge for adults born in or after 1966 who have not received the required two doses, as well as for children aged six months to less than 12 months who are traveling internationally.
All residents of South Australia are encouraged to verify their vaccination status and seek the vaccine if there is no record of them having received both doses.
