Are the Seattle SuperSonics Coming Back? NBA Expansion Vote 2026 Explained (2026)

The NBA's potential expansion is a hot topic, and it's time to dive into the exciting possibilities! Seattle and Las Vegas are in the spotlight as potential new homes for NBA teams, but will the beloved Sonics make their long-awaited return? Let's explore the journey ahead.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has set the stage, indicating that the league's expansion vote will take place in 2026. A recent call with Governor Bob Ferguson has sparked local enthusiasm, with hopes soaring for the SuperSonics' comeback.

Beth Knox, President and CEO of the Seattle Sports Commission, has been closely following the league's expansion plans and the city's response. She describes the atmosphere as "exhilarating and a little frantic," reflecting the passion of Seattle's sports fans. Knox emphasizes that while the NBA's expansion is a possibility, there's still a lot of work to be done to prepare for a team's arrival.

"An ownership group needs to be assembled, which is a crucial step. But it's also about engaging our community and ensuring they're on board," Knox explains. "It's all part of the NBA's strategy."

The cost of establishing a new franchise is expected to be significant, with recent team valuations suggesting expansion fees could reach billions. Last year, the Boston Celtics sold for a whopping $6.1 billion, and the Portland Trail Blazers are projected to fetch over $4 billion.

Despite the absence of a men's team, local businesses are already witnessing high demand for Seattle basketball merchandise. Brandon Miner, co-owner of Pro Image, a sports apparel store, shares, "We're selling a lot of Sonic gear as it is. Having a team to associate with that gear would be incredible."

Miner adds that the Sonics' return would be "the icing on the cake" for Seattle, which is already celebrating the success of the Mariners and Seahawks. He also notes that former players, like SuperSonics star Gary Payton, remain invested in the Sonics brand.

"Payton actually visited our store during the NFC Championship game. He was looking to buy his jersey," Miner recalls.

The NBA Board of Governors is expected to cast their votes during the summer months. Knox assures, "If the league chooses Seattle, we'll be ready and responsive."

While the exact date for the summer vote remains unknown, the anticipation is building. Will Seattle welcome the Sonics back with open arms? Only time will tell.
